Visions of Flying Monkeys…

February 22, 2013

flying monkey

– – In the beginning, there was the classic The Wizard of Oz in 1939, based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Disney had contemplated an animated film based on the first of Baum’s Oz books, but lost out the rights to MGM in 1938, and the rest became film history. Disney Productions did acquire the rights to the remaining thirteen Oz books in 1954, and in 1985, Disney produced Return to Oz, a rather dark and eerie film which was not exactly child-friendly or in the spirit of its predecessor, and so performed poorly, both critically and commercially.  The Oz franchise was then basically put into mothballs for more than a quarter century…and lo, I have waited these many years for a really good flying monkey, one with a discernible personality, not just one of the “Army of Darkness” type drones that served the Wicked Witch in the original…

…and at long last, Sam Raimi, who gave us the Spiderman trilogy, appears poised to deliver just that!  In Oz the Great and Powerful, we are given flying monkeys that not only talk, but are gentle and whimsical creatures, worthy furry sidekicks!  We are also given so much more…three witches, and the backstories to the Oz saga that fleshes out both the place, and the “Wizard” who becomes its reluctant and faltering savior.  Constructed as a “prequel” to the original 1939 classic, this film has big shoes to fill, but just might pull it off…but don’t expect to see ruby slippers, they are copyrighted to the original.  It will be so good to see the Wicked Witch again, as the better the villain, the better the tale!  And the green-hued one looks awesome!

Oz the Great and Powerful is coming to theaters March 8th…and as always, best witches to you all!

Fishy, Fishy…

February 19, 2013

cabin– – When an asteroid passes within a cosmic whisker of Earth and a meteorite smashes down in the former Soviet Union, one might not be totally surprised that small, plaque-mounted anthropomorphic fish are becoming more vocal than humans.  In a variant of the McDonald’s Fish McBites commercial, we again visit with the young gentleman in the checked plaid shirt, this time in a beautiful, wood-paneled cabin.

Two young women enter the cabin through the door and see the young guy feeding his face.  “Hey, what are those?,” asks one of the women, clearly no more of a Rhodes scholar than the guy.  Fortunately, the fish themselves are well-able to answer her query, with one responding and then the group of mounted fish launching into a rhythmic cadence of “Fishy, fishy!- – Fish, fish McBites!- -McBites!”  Soon all of the trio are munching away on the item, with the guy saying not a word during the whole commercial, even to the women…

…and I thought that fish were reputed to be “brain food!”   articulate fish

The Petrified Cat Market…

February 15, 2013

Oddities– – It’s hard to find a good petrified cat; most are dried out and decayed, and don’t smell very good.  There are aesthetics to be considered when buying a petrified cat, or for that matter, a mummified squirrel; not just any one will do!

Enter the bizarre world of macabre memorabilia as presented through the Science Channel and the Discovery Channel documentary/reality show Oddities, which details the operations of Obscura Antiques & Oddities as they go about procuring oddball items like deformed skeletons, skulls, child-sized straitjackets, and archaic medical items for eager clients.  –Remember that one man’s trash is another’s treasure, and that there’s a market for almost everything in this world!

The show debuted in 2010, and is now in it’s fourth season.  Operating out of the East Village in New York City (–where else?), the business has been overwhelmed by people trying to sell petrified cats and mummified squirrels that they found in their attics, and as a result is no longer in the market for them.  It’s hardly your grandmother’s antique shop…this is far more interesting!

Absolut Greyhounds…

February 11, 2013

greyhounds – – If Skynet designed greyhounds, they would probably look something like these beauties; starkly striking robotic greyhound creatures who are racing for their lives in a Mad Max styled desert wasteland.  Both a music video and a commercial, the video features the music of electronic dance trio Swedish House Mafia, who appropriately perform their track, Greyhound, while electronically transformed in the video to robotic dogs who chase a floating orb.  Bizarrely costumed guests watch the greyhounds go through their paces while drinking Absolut cocktails served by a  waiter in a mask with animal styling.

It’s kind of a desert masquerade ball that is surreal and futuristic, with stunning detailed visual imagery and intense electro-house music.  Some have objected to the commercial, however, for its depiction of greyhound racing, an activity often described as animal cruelty…

Doritos “Goat 4 Sale” Commercial…

February 5, 2013

doritos goat– – Goats tend to be slighted, and really don’t get the attention that they deserve.  One crosses a goat at their own peril…or some might infer from the “Goat 4 Sale” commercial by Doritos featured on the Super Bowl.

Made by users and chosen by fans, the commercial features a goat named “Moose” who is depicted being picked up by a new owner at a yard sale.  The owner-pet relationship appears to be a match made in heaven, as both the man and his new goat love Doritos, and the man appears to have a generous stock of the snack on hand.  Alas, however, the man underestimated the passion of the goat for Doritos, and after the animal consumes hundreds of bags of the product (with loud, actual goat-chewing sounds), his owner attempts to cut him off and sell the goat.  The goat screams a memorable, piercing scream, and then it’s pay-back time…beware the wrath of the goat!  The raucous, boogie sound track of the spot is a blast, too…

Maxwell the Geico Pig’s Date…

February 3, 2013

Maxwell's date– – Maxwell the Geico pig continues to evolve; he doesn’t appear to exclaim “Wheee!” anymore, plays with electronics, and apparently can even drive a car.  He could use some coaching on relationships with the opposite sex, however, passing up an ideal lover’s lane opportunity with a girl who appears to be hot for his porky body.- -Maxwell, it would seem, is more of a techie than a lover!

In the latest Geico commercial featuring Maxwell, he is stranded in a broken-down convertible car with a rather comely lass, and appears to be fooling with his hand-held device.  “Did you just turn your ringer off so no one would interrupt us?,” questions the lady.  Maxwell responds that he just used his Geico app to summon a tow truck, his ears rising as he finally perceives that his date wants to “pass the time.”  Maxwell has an idea ready to pass the 30-minute waiting interval, and unfortunately it’s not the past-time that the lady apparently desires; no, for Maxwell immediately switches his hand-held to a rousing game of “Fruit Ninja!”  The look of disappointment (or whatever) on his date’s eyes is classic as Maxwell enthusiastically launches into the game…

Many questions go unanswered.  We are not told how Maxwell’s little legs can reach the car’s pedals, or how his cloven hooves can operate his device, for example…but at least we are spared the messy and probably distasteful details of human/pig relationships, something for which we all can be grateful…although I’m sure that some of our readership can relate to having dated real pigs!  Thankfully, no one can refer to Maxwell as a chauvinist pig…

Animals of the Super Bowl…

February 2, 2013

subaru's dogs– – For those not into the almost omnipresent Super Bowl in the U.S. this weekend, the Animal Planet network will air as in past years its “Puppy Bowl” event, complete with new commercials by Subaru of America that target consumers likely to transport canine passengers in a recurring campaign called, “Dog Tested.  Dog Approved.”  Four of the dog-based ads will also appear on YouTube, specifically titled “On the Lot,” “Tailgate,” “Let’s Talk Financing,” and “Lint Roller.”

The Budweiser Super Bowl ad will again feature their classic Clydesdale horses, which have appeared in 23 Super Bowl ads since 1986.  This year’s offering called “Brotherhood” features a 7-day-old foal and his growing relationship with his trainer… Clydesdale

Feline Terminators…

January 31, 2013

blofeld-cat– – It’s been said that were videos about cats and pornography eliminated from the internet, there would be little left!  While appealing and loved by many, cats can at times also show a darker side.  Here we see the lap cat of Bond arch-villain Blofeld.  Cats have demonstrated abilities to be efficient predators, as has been recently noted by research conducted by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published on Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

The study found that previous wildlife mortality estimates owing to feline predation were way too low.  Cats, primarily un-owned, feral ones, are felt to be responsible for the deaths of 1.4 to 3.7 billion birds, and 6.9 to 20.7 billion mammals annually.  If 2.3 billion birds are killed by cats, this would mean that 1 in 10 birds are taken by cats every year.

In New Zealand, cats are considered an invasive species, and have prompted environmentalist/economist Gareth Morgan to push for much tighter controls on the island nation’s cat population expressed through a “Cats to Go” campaign.  Rather than declaring open season on cats, however, the program advocates neutering cats, keeping them indoors, and not getting any new ones.

The American study does not recommend any drastic schemes to cut down on U.S. wildlife deaths, but rather calls for “conservation and policy intervention” in order to reduce environmental impact.  It should be pointed out that humans are responsible for most modern animal extinctions, whether through hunting, habitat destruction, introduction of invasive species, or other environmental disruptions…

Ordeal of the Aflac Duck…

January 20, 2013

Aflec duck– – The Aflac Duck had seemed almost indestructible up to this point…after all, he’s been bonked by soccer balls, whacked with logs, singed by flames, and even dropped into the Grand Canyon.  Now the daredevil duck has suffered the unthinkable, involved in an undisclosed accident with ensuing injuries to his wing and beak!  In a new series of television commercials, a “doctor” discusses the duck’s disaster in front of reporters, and we only see the familiar fowl as a small fixed image on the screen.

The campaign is to illustrate that if the iconic duck can run afoul of fate, anyone can get hurt.  Of course, his Aflac insurance is going to take care of the hospitalized duck’s expenses.- -What else is he gonna do, put them on his bill?!

The Python Purge Proceeds…

January 18, 2013

Florida python hunt– – The month-long python purge is in progress in Florida, with about 800 intrepid hunters in pursuit of the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Burmese pythons who live in the Everglades where they are an invasive species and decimate natural populations.  The pythons are elusive, however, and not that many carcasses have been turned in to date.  Recommended methods of dispatching them include shooting or cutting off their heads with a machete; the “captive bolt” method is also mentioned if the device can be attached to their heads to destroy their brains as one would a zombie.

If encountered, the pythons are unlikely to engage in a death struggle with their pursuers, and most will likely either remain where they are spotted or seek to escape.  Most are thought to have been spawned from pet shop purchased snakes that either escaped or were released by their owners into the wild when their size exceeded expectations.  A carnivorous, apex predator, the pythons have been known to consume prey as large as deer and alligators…
