The Ins and Outs of McDonald’s Pigs…

January 26, 2010

– – McDonald’s recently introduced a series of cartoon character miniatures in Singapore depicting the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar; think Happy Meal-type toys. Not wishing to offend Muslims, however, McDonald’s replaced the pig with a character of the love god Cupid, which turned out to be stupid

If you’re gonna do something, do it right and do it correctly, which doesn’t mean catering to political correctness to an extent that defeats the purpose of what you’re doing.- –Well, Mickey D’s didn’t anticipate a backlash by the 75% Chinese population in Singapore, who understandably complained that they would not have a chance to buy the complete set or for those involved, the animal character representing their birth year.

McDonald’s then backpedaled, re-instituting the pig character and apologizing all over themselves to the Chinese community. The Pig as one of the Chinese zodiac characters is part of Chinese culture and customs, and is not representing food offensive to Muslims…and for crying out loud, it was in this case  just a little stuffed toy!

It’s nice to occasionally see political correctness lose out to common sense!

Ellen DeGeneres Receives PETA Honor

January 2, 2010

– – U.S. TV hostess Ellen Degeneres has been named Woman of the Year by PETA (People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals) for her work in raising awareness of their campaigns promoting a lifestyle friendly to nature.  Tim Gunn was named Man of the Year.  PETA said that it gave Ellen its award for being vegan and championing a meat and dairy-free lifestyle, as well as for some of the guests featured on her show.

“The message that animals must be treated kindly and respectfully has reached scores of people, and many of them have changed their buying habits, all because Gunn and DeGeneres spoke up for the voiceless,” said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk.

…and that’s a good thing!

RU Ready?

December 7, 2009

– -The 11th  International Animal Rights Day (IARD) is coming December 10th!  The observance aims to remember the animal victims of human tyranny, and calls for the recognition of the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights. Building on the recognition of human rights, the campaign seeks to persuade humanity that respect and kindness are due to all sentient creatures.

Protests on December 10th are most likely to be focused on vivisection animal suppliers, inhumane laboratory experiments, and fur and intensive method farms…

Howloween’s Coming…

October 29, 2009

furries– – If you’re like me, you’ve always loved Halloween…I mean, really loved it!  Halloween is the one day of the mundane world year that kinda allows the freak show playing in the heads of many of us for the other 364 days as well to go on.   It’s a day when you can bring your inner furry self out without being condemned or stigmatized as much as you otherwise might be.   For a while, you can actually just kinda belong, and be yourself!

…I think that acceptance is what a lot of us who are furries really want, because so often it seems like we are put on the defensive, forced into the position of running damage control.   We just want to be allowed to be ourselves for the admittedly strange to some but rather unique creatures that we are, with paws in two worlds…is that so wrong, too much to ask for?

The Demonization and Canonization of Michael Jackson

June 27, 2009

Jackson— So what’s a Michael Jackson post doing in a furry blog?  Well, don’t forget that he did a rather good were in his Thriller video!

I think it’s important to separate Michael Jackson the artist from Michael Jackson the Sideshow, which occupied most of the public and press attention for the past 20 plus years or so.  Michael was a great performer with a variety of gifts, the megastar of the 1980’s.  In addition to the music, Michael was a dazzling dancer whose moves at times couldn’t be believed even when seen; he radiated vibrant youth and kinetic energy at his prime.   Thriller was as good a concept piece as has ever been done, the video inspired by Jackson’s enjoyment of American Werewolf in London. The dancing zombies of Thriller continue to awe me even today.

It’s unfortunate that Michael’s personal idiosyncrasies diminished his popularity and earned him the “Wacko Jacko” label; he didn’t need all those plastic surgeries, and at times conveyed an edge of creepiness.  Michael needed better handlers to save him from himself.   In middle age, Jackson struggled to recapture his earlier fame and fan base, following the destructive downward spiral that Elvis and other great performers have traveled, apparently and sadly not omitting the drug component.  As with Elvis, death is likely to provide Michael with a post-mortem career boost and solidify his reputation; the soaring accolades have already begun.   One wonders where all of his well-wishers were when Jackson stood almost alone on abuse charges, and when he was in crying need of interventions for apparent prescription drug addictions.

Immensely talented, tormented, and twisted, both child-like and complex, Michael Jackson was one of a kind.  Adored by some, demonized by others, he was always intriguing…rest in peace, Michael, and thank you for sharing your uniqueness and great performance gifts with us.

The Late Great FurNation?

May 12, 2009

FurNation– – <sighs>–FurNation is leaving us, this time seriously and fur real, perhaps to return as just a forum.  One of the true giants of the furry spectrum, FurNation did it all, and as well as anyone ever has…perhaps its reach exceeded its grasp, but it was a long and glorious ride!

There’s no magic to the impending end of FurNation…it has to do with money, as sadly does almost everything in this life.  It’s well to remember that nothing lasts forever…not even the rocks and stones themselves!  It’s also well to remember that ultimately, the things that made FurNation such a rare and awesome place continue to exist within us all, and will find voice and expression in a thousand different locations, in smaller but needy websites that need only your participation to make them special and uniquely your own. With each ending comes a new beginning, and there is only ultimately reconfiguration…for what is there is also here, and what is here is also there.

So be alert, be active, and be around…the possibilities are only limited by your imaginations…

The “Deadliest Warrior” Show On Spike TV!

April 15, 2009

samurai–If you’re like me, there are some things on TV you watch even if you’re not proud of the fact.  Spike TV’s Deadliest Warrior series is such wonderful nonsense, great guy stuff!  Remember the old pointless arguments about the victor in a fight between a ninja and a pirate?–Well, now they’ve built a show around this kinda premise!–Is this a great country, or what?!

Forget the fact that the combatants were products of different times and different places, and would never meet in real life…forget the fact that you can’t compare apples and oranges…just shut up, sit back, and watch the most unlikely of death matches between a Roman gladiator and an Apache, or between a Viking and a samurai!

Leading up to the main event are analysis of the weaponry and fighting styles of the two opponents pitted against one another, with consideration given to such things as who possessed the weapons most effective at long, medium, and close range.  The information is then factored into a computer simulation program which predicts the likely victor in many of such clashes.  For your viewing pleasure, a computer-generated death match is then presented at the end of the show.  The series is similar to Jurassic Fight Club, but with human combatants.

I was kinda surprised that the Apache was predicted to be victorious in the majority of match-ups against Roman gladiators, but the gladiators seem to have been portrayed as plodding  juggernauts vulnerable to the attack and retreat tactics of the more nimble Apache.  I was unsurprised by the victory of the samurai warrior over the Viking, although I do have as a furry great respect for the Vikings, the berserker version of which howled, wore bear or wolf skins, bit their shields, and in general worked themselves into a rage intended to frighten their enemies.

No, we’re not apparently gonna see Ninjas vs. Pirates on future versions of this show, but we are going to be treated to Pirate vs. Knight and Ninja vs. Spartan. By the way, in a Ninja vs. Pirate match, my money would be on the ninja.  Personally, though, I’d prefer to be a pirate, as I think they had more fun.  Ninjas were more into discipline, and pirates more into wenching, drinking, and pillaging. –When’s the last time you went to a good pillaging?–It’s a lost art, really…

Sure, it ain’t Shakespeare…but it  is great guy entertainment! —Woo-hoo!!!   😉

Timeless Thought…

gandhi

–“If a man does not of his own free will put himself last among his creatures, there is no salvation for him.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Is it not curious that a considerable number of self-proclaimed religiously devout people in the western world seem to regard the entire animal kingdom as commodities, as things or resources put on this world for human use?  This is not my view, nor shall it ever be…

Animal Law

February 16, 2009

animals–Some things shouldn’t happen to a dog…but they do!

Animal Law is one of the fastest growing fields in the legal profession.  In 1993, just seven states had felony animal cruelty laws; today, all but four do…

“Animal law is where environmental law was 20 years ago.  It’s in its infancy but growing,” said Paula Frasch, who heads the National Center for Animal Law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland.

In 2000, only nine law schools had animal law studies; today about 100 do.   Incidents of abuse and a shifting national consciousness have made this one of the fastest growing fields in the legal profession.
