The Value of a Dog’s Love…

December 18, 2009

– – As those who share life with them can testify, a dog’s love (and that of cats or other animal companions) is priceless.  But to date, such companions have legally been considered property.–Well, the state Supreme Court of Vermont is being asked to consider what a dog’s love is worth…a mixed- breed dog named Shadow.

That court is hearing a case that began in July of 2003 when two people visiting relatives let their dog wander onto a neighbor’s property. The neighbor fired an air gun pellet at the dog in the hopes of scaring it off his property, claiming that he intended to hit the dog in the rear end.  The pellet instead penetrated the dog’s chest and severed his aorta, and he died soon thereafter on route to the vet.

The shooter pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges, a misdemeanor.  He was given a year of probation,  ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, and pay a $4,000 fine in restitution to the dog’s owners. The owners of the dog, however, have pressed a civil case against the shooter, claiming that their dog was more than a piece of property, and that the compensation awarded was inadequate and did not incorporate emotional loss.

Historically, laws across the country have sharply limited the ability of plaintiffs to collect damages for emotional loss.  The same court earlier this year ruled against a plaintiff seeking to collect for emotional distress when a cat’s death resulted from a veterinarian’s medication error.  That case, however, involved negligence whereas in this case the defendant is alleged to have acted with malice and intent when he shot Shadow.

The case accordingly is potentially precedent-setting, and could result in an expansion of animal rights and protection…

RU Ready?

December 7, 2009

– -The 11th  International Animal Rights Day (IARD) is coming December 10th!  The observance aims to remember the animal victims of human tyranny, and calls for the recognition of the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights. Building on the recognition of human rights, the campaign seeks to persuade humanity that respect and kindness are due to all sentient creatures.

Protests on December 10th are most likely to be focused on vivisection animal suppliers, inhumane laboratory experiments, and fur and intensive method farms…

Hold That Tiger!

October 31, 2009

Tiger— Tigers could become extinct in the wild in two decades unless conservation efforts are stepped up to halt the decline in their population, wildlife experts said on Wednesday…

…barely 3,500 tigers are estimated to be roaming in the wild in twelve Asian countries and Russia compared to about 100,000 a century ago, according to conservationists and other experts.

Tigers are being illegally killed for their body parts, with skins selling for up to $20,000 on the black market in countries like China.   The destruction of habitats and the depletion of their prey base also figures in the dwindling number of tigers.  Tiger habitat alone has declined by 40% in the past decade due to the destruction of forests…

…and by the way…Happy Halloween from Foxsylvania!

Howloween’s Coming…

October 29, 2009

furries– – If you’re like me, you’ve always loved Halloween…I mean, really loved it!  Halloween is the one day of the mundane world year that kinda allows the freak show playing in the heads of many of us for the other 364 days as well to go on.   It’s a day when you can bring your inner furry self out without being condemned or stigmatized as much as you otherwise might be.   For a while, you can actually just kinda belong, and be yourself!

…I think that acceptance is what a lot of us who are furries really want, because so often it seems like we are put on the defensive, forced into the position of running damage control.   We just want to be allowed to be ourselves for the admittedly strange to some but rather unique creatures that we are, with paws in two worlds…is that so wrong, too much to ask for?

Furry Court Case!

October 8, 2009

bullfighting– – Warning:  Some Adult Topic Matter. The Supreme Court has been asked to rule on a law with furry implications which involves video depictions of animal cruelty. The disputed statute was used to prosecute a Virginia man who sold videos of pit bull fights.

The law originally was created in 1999 due to rightful congressional worries over “crush” videos, which, I’m horrified to say, depict women pounding high heels into small animals to appeal to an extremely sick and sadistic sexual kink.  Civil liberty groups say that the statute is overly broad and could leave to prosecutors’ discretion whether to go after films that show hunting and bullfighting; I’ve found such videos objectionable as well, but it boils down to what is considered animal cruelty, and how broadly one defines it.

The justices have indicated that Congress went too far in its attempt to protect animals from abuse…note that Justice Scalia is an avid hunter.  I regret that civil liberties and animal rights groups have found themselves at odds over this one, a case which may have unfortunate and far-reaching implications, and may be construed as a step backwards…

Pop Tarts…

September 13, 2009

Pam Anderson— Pamela Anderson has made a series of anti-fur, anti-leather spots for PETA. Only trouble is, they are a bit too…err, hot to be posted in New York City airports, or for that matter, aired on television.  In some, she is wearing less than in the posted image (not that there’s anything wrong with leafy vegetables)!

The rejection of these images comes as a bit of a surprise to Ms. Anderson, who as you can see, has little to hide.  True to her campaign, Ms. Anderson isn’t wearing any fur, either…nope, definitely no fur being worn here, furolks…our staff has gone over these pictures carefully, ahem!

…I just love tributes to vegetarianism, don’t you?–Well, Pam’s heart is in the right place…and so, I might add, is everything else…

Disney and Marvel?

September 12, 2009

Wolverine— Well, Disney has bought Marvel Entertainment for about four billion bucks…a fair piece of change by anyone’s standards.  The move will make Disney house owner of Marvel’s dazzling array of characters, and probably improve Disney’s appeal to males…

…one hopes that Disney will not neuter Marvel’s characters, and that we’ll never hear Wolverine sing, “When you wish upon a star.” –Will we see the Hulk School Musical?–Will Wolverine and Sabertooth have a song fight?–One suspects that Logan would not be pleased by this merger…

The Late Great FurNation?

May 12, 2009

FurNation– – <sighs>–FurNation is leaving us, this time seriously and fur real, perhaps to return as just a forum.  One of the true giants of the furry spectrum, FurNation did it all, and as well as anyone ever has…perhaps its reach exceeded its grasp, but it was a long and glorious ride!

There’s no magic to the impending end of FurNation…it has to do with money, as sadly does almost everything in this life.  It’s well to remember that nothing lasts forever…not even the rocks and stones themselves!  It’s also well to remember that ultimately, the things that made FurNation such a rare and awesome place continue to exist within us all, and will find voice and expression in a thousand different locations, in smaller but needy websites that need only your participation to make them special and uniquely your own. With each ending comes a new beginning, and there is only ultimately reconfiguration…for what is there is also here, and what is here is also there.

So be alert, be active, and be around…the possibilities are only limited by your imaginations…

The Prince’s Rainforest Video

May 6, 2009

princePrince Charles, together with such well-known figures as Harrison Ford and Robin Williams, has made a video to promote preservation of the Amazonian rainforest.  Princes William and Harry also make appearances, as does a frog!

It’s good to see the Royals using their influence on behalf of such a worthwhile project!— – And who wouldn’t want to see Charles with a frog?–And if a prince kisses a frog, what does it turn into?

Some things it’s better not to know…
