elephant.jpg   Drunken elephants in northern India are getting a buzz on rice beer made by farmers, and going on rampages!  Three people were killed lately, including a 4-year-old boy.  Supposedly Paris Hilton is raising awareness of the problem, which is real…these are not the legendary pink elephants supposedly seen after one too many!

clam.jpg   Know what the oldest living creature is?–Nope, not your Great Aunt Agatha. — It’s a Quahog clam found off Iceland that’s estimated to be 405 years old!  This breaks the record of a 374-year-old clam!

By comparison, the oldest human ever to live reached age 122.  This was a Frenchwoman who died in 1997. –A mere kid by comparison!  Clams, however, can’t hold a witty conversation.

Oh Deer…

deer.jpg   Two zoo polar bears got a surprise chance to stalk wild prey Friday morning when a deer got into their exhibit.  The deer entered the zoo by clearing an 8-foot perimeter fence, and after walking around, wandered onto an exhibit roof.  The buck dove 20 feet from the roof of the “Water’s Edge” exhibit at a Pittsburgh zoo.  The deer landed in the water and when he got out, the bears followed, their response mostly inquisitive.  Polar bears would not normally eat a deer.   A few seconds later, the deer splashed back into the pool, swam around, and again left the pool with the bears in pursuit.

The deer jumped back into the pool a third time and again the bears followed.  The buck actually turned and attacked the bears at one point!  The zoo CEO and president said, “The deer was attacking well.  I was quite impressed.”  The deer was butting heads and pushing the bears back

Zookeepers broke up the fight, but unfortunately the valiant deer had to be euthanized because of injuries suffered in the fall…he acquitted himself well in spite of being badly injured.

Marketable Milk

milk.jpg  –We’re all mammals, right?  That means we have mammary glands, among other things.  Well, there’s a woman who’s selling 100 ounces of her own breast milk for about $200, since she has twice what her baby needs.  This really isn’t all that strange anymore, and women have been selling breast milk on line since 2005; it’s not illegal.  You can find several hundred sites for this.

What is …different is that not all of the human breast milk is bought for babies.  Some is bought by grown men who, well, are kinky.   We won’t go further into this, but you get the idea.–Nature’s perfect food?  Whatever, but that sold on line isn’t necessarily screened for diseases.

But you just gotta admire the packaging…

washoe  Washoe, said to be the first chimpanzee to learn American Sign Language, has passed away in the state of Washington.   This remarkable chimp had a vocabulary of 250 words, and even taught other chimps sign language!   She was born in Africa about 1965.

We have much to learn about animal intelligence!

The Darker Side of Folk Medicine

sriracha-tiger-zoo.jpg  At the Sriracha Tiger Zoo in  Thailand near Bangkok, they race pigs to supplement tiger breeding programs and cocodile exhibits.  Visitors can bet on a pig to win, and get a prize if their pig is victorious in the race.  The pig racing is cute and popular, as are the tiger cubs…but some of the tigers find their way to China where their body parts are in demand for folk medicine, which is not cool…

Similar demand for bear gall bladders and other body parts in China fuels the illegal slaughter of bears and other species in North America at the hands of poachers…a very dark and despicable business indeed!

Why Dinosaurs?

– -So why the fascination with dinosaurs, and why do so many people…little boys and guys, especially…love them?–Well, dinosaurs didn’t take orders, did what they wanted to, and were best known for their larger specimens.  They appeal instinctually to the male Id, that primitive part in all of us.  Dinosaurs didn’t go out quietly, and didn’t die in nursing homes.  They were forever untamed, and were really an outgrowth of the natural world.–Primitive and good at it!

There’s also something cool to a kid about knowing of something adults don’t, and don’t even care about.  Dinosaurs are forever part of the internal kid landscape, and we hope for them to come back!

It’s fun to speculate about what life forms will survive beyond humans…roaches can!

New Dinosaur Found!

dino.jpg   The Puertasaurus has been found in Argentina…a few vertebrae, at least.  It’s a new sauropod dinosaur that lived 70 – 90 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period. — This puppy was well over 100 feet long!

Don’t you love dinosaurs?  Most little boys do, and know more about them than almost anything else.  I used to have a pretty extensive collection of hard rubber dinosaurs when I was a kid.  If not for the mass extinction of 65 million years ago when that asteroid or whatever hit the earth, reptiles would probably have continued to evolve, probably becoming sentient and intelligent.

But now that they’re safely dead, we can smugly call the dinosaurs clumsy and stupid…we’ll see if homo sapiens last for a fraction of the time that “Thunder Lizards” did!

cow.jpg     A cow in Cambodia was arrested and held at a police station on charges of causing six traffic deaths this year.  Most recently, a motorcycle rider hit the cow and died; many Cambodian roads are dark at night.  Earlier, a truck had veered off the road while trying to avoid the cow, resulting in the deaths of five people.

The cow’s owner had been warned four times to keep the cow penned up or leashed; I guess you could say that this was an udder failure!  The owner could face a six month prison sentence…

appendectomy-series.jpg   The appendix, long regarded as a useless, vestigial organ, may not be worthless after all!  Scientists are now thinking that the appendix may be an incubator or breeding ground for healthy, pro-biotic bacteria that support your gut and its functions!

Yes, you can live without it…but the appendix still serves a purpose!
