Curse of the Monkey Man!

June 11, 2009

monkeyman– – Heh, you gotta love MonsterQuest for its theatrical episode titles, and this one sounds like a B-movie out of the 50’s!  Anyhow, the Monkster is described as up to 8′ tall but nimble; he’d be a great b-ball player.  Monkey Man also has black hair, a gorilla-like face, and makes strange sounds.  It’s a complete package.

Indigenous to India, accounts of Monkey Man date back to 77 B.C., when he was described by Pliny.  Supposed attacks of the creature reached a high in May 2001 in Delhi, with victims beaten and clawed by a powerful assailant; three people died while fleeing the creature, and dozens were hospitalized.  The most recent attacks are attributed to Meghalaya, where 14-1/2″ footprints and broken branches were found.  Natives in this part of India call the creature “the forest man.”  Blood samples were taken from the walls of a dwelling where an encounter occurred, and hair samples were also found elsewhere.

And what, you may ask, did MonsterQuest find?–Interestingly enough, the bites that were found on supposed victims were of a different nature than those inflicted by a monkey or another animal.  Hairs that were found and subjected to microscopic analysis were found to be similar to those of the red panda;  blood samples were human.  Police investigations in Delhi were negative, and experts suggest a mass hysteria/psychosis phenomenon.

A Hindu deity also has simian features, but he is noted to be a benign type, not really into the biting, scratching, and clawing thing…

“The Mysterious Water Ape”

April 30, 2009

ape-island–Vancouver Island off the Canadian coast was visited by MonsterQuest during a recent episode in search of a large, ape-like cryptid 6′ – 9′ tall and weighing about 800 lbs., reported to be agile despite his size.  The island can only be reached by water, but grizzlies can do this and primates likewise can learn to use water.  This cryptid appears near water-rich areas, and appears to enjoy shellfish.

Despite the lack of a fossil trail, numerous eyewitness accounts (at least 80) dating back to 1900 exist of the “water ape,” and castings of footprints remain the most convincing evidence.  “Call-blasting” of reported Sasquatch cries by MonsterQuest failed to yield the rascal, and imaging equipment yielded only a heat imprint.

With casts of “unknown origin,” there appears to be strong physical evidence of something on Vancouver Island.  You don’t want to kill the creature, however, with native legends suggesting that death with find you within seven years if you harm this cryptid…

Florida’s Sea Monster…

April 23, 2009

florida–It has a large, somewhat mammalian head, clawed fins, and a trident-like tail…so they say of Florida’s sea monster, with sightings dating back to the 1800’s.  There’s apparently more than one of these puppies, and they have the potential to move quickly with a lot of power.  Hours of video footage exist by a guy named Sowerwine showing bits and pieces of the creature.

MonsterQuest went to an ocean-fed coastal lake in Florida to investigate such legends of a sea monster with a forked tail, but the lake was full of sediment, and the divers couldn’t see diddly.  They did, however, have an intriguing sonar hit of something about 14 feet long moving quickly, although murky water conditions made it impossible to find the sucker.

One expert feels that the creature is a manatee, although the snout of the beast is skinnier and its eye and head structure appear different.  Others feel that the animal is a seal of some kind following the Gulf Stream, possibly a Hooded seal or a Caribbean Monk seal, thought to be extinct.  Then it may be a hybrid creature, part-manatee and part seal…

…at any rate, there’s something as yet undiscovered in Florida waters!

Close Encounters!

March 27, 2009

lizard-man1

–A recent episode of MonsterQuest presented that “Violent encounters with strange beasts may be increasing.” A number of cases were presented in support of this contention.

In Yakima, Washington, a Bigfoot-like creature is reported to have kept pace with a car traveling at 35 mph; in addition to the reporter cited, Bigfoot was additionally seen by dozens in this area, including four policemen!

In Minnesota, a creature was hit by a car, and then shot at by two brothers (Talk about having a bad day!).  MonsterQuest investigated, seeking DNA from a bullet shot at the creature and lodged in a tree; no DNA was recovered.

In South Carolina, claw marks and puncture holes were found on a van which also had its bumper pulled out; testing suggested that 306 lbs. of force were required to do this to the bumper.  A lizard man was felt responsible, not the heavily-tattooed sideshow gentleman, but rather a bipedal creature 7-8 feet tall  with big red eyes and three fingers on each hand.  Blood samples taken from the vehicle were at first found to be contaminated, later testing as from a domestic dog.

The same episode reported an Indiana hunter sighting a gray, strongly-built ape-man like creature with a massive chest who showed his teeth.  Polygraph testing (87%-95% accurate) showed that this observer was “non-deceptive.”

A commentator speculated that more violent interactions with strange unidentified creatures are likely to occur in the years ahead, possibly resulting in a death…

Mysterious Creature Seen Near Lancaster County

March 18, 2009

nutria1–A mysterious creature has been reported around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  Described as reddish, weighing about 200 pounds, and looking like a giant beaver, the animal may be a pig or a capybara, although game officials think it is most likely a nutria.

nutria sounds like a healthy ingredient in a breakfast cereal, but is actually a large rodent not indigenous to the United States, hailing from South America.  Thirteen nutrias were brought to the U.S. from Argentina in 1937, where they escaped confinement and multiplied like wildfire in a number of southern states, especially Louisiana.   Nutrias tend to reside near waterways, and are generally considered a destructive pest; they were originally imported out of interest in their fur.

The trouble with nutrias as an explanation for the unknown creature is that they don’t weight anywhere near 200 pounds, but are more in the ballpark of 10-20 pounds.  People, however, tend to exaggerate, and are often phobic about rodents, especially large ones…

Devils in New Jersey

February 26, 2009

jersey-devil–There’s a special place in my heart for the Jersey Devil, having resided in New Jersey for years in the past.  I never liked portrayals of the Jersey Devil that were on the comical side, however, for he’s an awesome cryptid.

A recent episode of MonsterQuest gave the Devil his due, portraying him with proper respect.  This blog has featured both the Jersey Devil and the Montauk Monster in the past, and I don’t want to repeat what I’ve already covered.  Suffice it to say that the Jersey Devil has a rich and far-reaching history extending back around 250 years to the 13th child of a legendary Mother Leeds, who when pregnant with that child cursed him, saying “Let him be a devil!”–Well, be careful what ‘ya wish for, ’cause ‘ya may get it, right?  Not only was the 13th child a devil, but in some variants of the story, he consumed his mother and siblings before ascending up the chimney.– He’ll never get any presents on Xmas or  his birthday, but ‘ya gotta love the guy!

Now descriptions of the Jersey Devil vary, but in many accounts he’s described as a winged, horse-like creature with a long neck, red eyes, and a serpentine tail.  There have been many sighting of the creature over time, especially in the large, Pine Barrens region of southern New Jersey; in the early 20th century, significant numbers of people reported sightings, causing hysteria.  More recent cases include one in 1997 where a mother and child were outdoors and saw the creature in a tree, barely making it indoors before the beast landed on their roof and left footprints that couldn’t be identified as those of any known species.

The Jersey Devil should not be confused with the Montauk Monster, which is now thought to have been a decomposing canine (most likely a Boxer) that washed up on a beach.  The Montauk Monster briefly caused a stir when photos of  something weird and disgusting surfaced amidst rumors that it had been produced by the nearby Plum Island facility, reputed to be creating biological weapons for deployment against the Russians during the Cold War era (much like myself).

MonsterQuest presented alternative explanations for the Jersey Devil, including that it is actually a misidentified Great Horned Owl, or perhaps an African Hammerhead Bat.  For that matter, the Jersey Devils are also a professional hockey team in that state, and  far too many people in Jersey drive like bats out of hell…but I digress.

While MonsterQuest investigations in the Pine Barrens yielded nothing, eyewitness descriptions allowed creation of an awesome sculpture of the Devil which the 1997 observers said was much like what they saw; those same eyewitnesses also passed polygraph tests, indicating that they were telling the truth about what they thought they saw…and as it was said, it’s “Possible something is out there that could remain hidden for a significant time.”

or at least, one can hope!

The Swamp Stalker of Boggy Creek…

February 20, 2009

boggy-creek-monster–Known as The Swamp Stalker of Boggy Creek or The Boggy Creek Monster, this cryptid is reportedly a large, black-haired, barrel-chested creature who walks upright and stands about 7′ high.  He was the subject of a 1972 movie titled, The Legend of Boggy Creek.

Recently profiled on MonsterQuest, sightings of The Swamp Stalker have come from Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, especially the town of Fouke in Arkansas.  Sightings intensified in the late 20th century.  A theory is that The Stalker may simply be a misidentified black bear, although some of the sightings have come from areas not indigenous to black bears.

MonsterQuest set camera traps with 360 degree lenses which yielded only images of known animal species and a few human hunters.  A large old scat sample (feces) turned out upon analysis to be from a wild boar.

And so as with many similar cryptid creatures, the existence of The Swamp Stalker of Boggy Creek “remains undocumented…”

The Alaskan “Thing”

September 2, 2008

— Hope you weren’t eating; I’ve got some “thing” to show you!  This “thing” was washed up off a remote island by Alaska in early August 2008. The island was very remote and the sea too rough for the “thing” to be inspected up close, and so it was photographed from a boat. The question arises, what is this thing? Possible answers include an aborted Beluga whale fetus, a decomposed elephant seal, or a ray. We may never know now what this “thing” is (or was), since it is likely to have been carried away since its discovery.   Post-mortem identification of species remains can be challenging due to rapid decomposition and predation, if you’re lucky enough to get ahold of anything at all…
