Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” is Coming!

June 21, 2018

I’ve always loved Tim Burton’s work for his dark, twisted, and even macabre take on things.  When Burton joins with Disney, we tend to get a less saccharine and darker vision of a great story with surreal, frequently animal elements, and so Tim Burton’s upcoming 2019 version of the Disney classic Dumbo promises to be a real treat.

We had last seen Dumbo as a two dimensional cartoon image in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and his upcoming outing will be as a far more realistic CGI elephant that is flawlessly integrated with a stellar live-action cast that includes such diverse talent as Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito.  And yes, the hauntingly sad lullaby Baby Mine from the 1940’s classic will be incorporated, so get those tissues ready for when mother elephant is chained up and separated from her baby…

The flying baby elephant with the endearingly enormous ears will be soaring across a big top circus tent in your neighborhood around March 2019.  He works for peanuts, after all…

“Agent P” Rocks!

July 2, 2009

Perry the PlatypusDisney stuff is usually too mainstream and white breadish for me, but I have to love Perry the Platypus, pet of the title characters in the Disney Channel show, Phineas and Ferb. Unknown to his owners, Perry (aka “Agent P”) lives a parallel life as a secret agent for The Agency, a government organization of animal spies.  Pretending to be a mindless house pet, Perry is secretly a fedora-wearing secret agent who enjoys romance soap operas and potato chips.

While Perry’s exploits are secondary plots to those involving the human owners, it’s worth tuning in to see Perry thwart his evil nemesis, Dr. Doofenshmirtz.  This is usually fairly easy for Perry to do as his archenemy doesn’t even recognize the platypus unless he is wearing his trademark fedora; another stereotypic scientist portrayed as lacking rudimentary common sense <sighs>.

How many other platypus ‘toon characters can you name? — And perhaps the notion of leading a parallel life is all too familiar to those of us who are furry…

…I wonder if The Agency is hiring?

Disney Animal Sidekicks

August 1, 2008

Disney cartoon movies follow a formula which almost always includes an amusing animal sidekick; an example of such would be the raccoon Meeko in the film, Pocahontas. There are many other examples which can readily be cited; the meerkat and warthog to Simba in The Lion King, to name others.  The sidekicks are usually funny, and may at times provide comic relief for a serious situation, guide the main character, or serve as alternative “selves” to that character.  The Disney formula has been both popular and successful, but may portray the animal sidekicks as lightweights rather than stand-alone characters.  This can kind of reinforce the “kiddy character” of animated Disney flicks, although they often may be the only films with furry characters that many adults see, and that to please or entertain their kids.

My favorite Disney film?–Why, Robin Hood, of course, featuring as it does a fox properly portraying the title role…
