Some “Thing” Familiar…

October 17, 2011

 – – I saw some Thing this weekend that was both some Thing old and some Thing new…namely, the prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter classic film of the same name.  The film was basically true to the mood and feeling of Carpenter’s previous epic, and has been criticized for not striking its own identity.  Heavy on atmospherics and paranoia, the new Thing is a dark movie…as well it should be.  The grandfather of the series, The Thing From Another World (1951),  was a classic film way ahead of its time, drawing in turn from the 1938 John W. Campbell novella, Who Goes There?

While the alien monster in John Carpenter’s film went out of its way to hide its identity and avoid detection, this prequel alien is much more visible, looking like a Lovecraft-inspired horror of claws, jaws, and flailing tentacles.  When we see the full-bodied creature scrabbling about, it appears part cephalopod and part crustacean, morphing as it assimilates and mimics the cellular structure of its victims and then hiding within them until the time for its next power play.

We are taken inside the massive starcraft of the alien when the few survivors of the decimated Antarctic Norwegian research station decide to limit the contagion by tracking the creature home, and in the closing scenes of the movie the filmmakers provide seamless transition scenes to where the Carpenter film begins.  While some of the prequel’s characters are monster kibble, Mary Elizabeth Winstead turns in a strong performance as paleontologist Kate Lloyd, a woman who like Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley knows her way around a flamethrower…

“Beetlejuice” Resurrection?

October 15, 2011

 – – One of my fave movies of all time and one which contributed to my love of over-the-top weirdness was the 1988 Tim Burton production of Beetlejuice, with Michael Keaton as the title character.  A new sequel is coming at an undetermined date, the movie will not be a re-make, and it may be called, Beetlejuice 2 or Beetlejuice Begins…it’s far too early to tell, or even what form the movie will take.  The original producer David Katzenberg and writer Seth Grahame-Smith will be making the sequel.

It’s also unknown at this stage whether all or part of the original cast will return, but one hopes that at least Michael Keaton will.  He shines in dark movies, whether comedy or drama, and his inspired, gleefully demented portrayal of Beetlejuice is what made the classic original a great gothic comedy…

…if we chant “Beetlejuice” three times, maybe we will again hear the great bio-exorcist say, “It’s showtime!

Rock-‘Em-Sock-‘Em Robots…

October 5, 2011

 – – I like robots, The Twilight Zone, and Hugh Jackman, so I’m likely to be sucker punched by Real Steel, a movie based on robotic boxing.  Inspired by the Richard Matheson short story Steel which was itself previously produced as a Twilight Zone episode, Real Steel is set in a near-future where human boxing has been banned in favor of robotic pugilism, and Jackman plays a former human boxer (Charlie Kenton) turned manager/trainer for robotic combatants.

Times are tough, however, and Jackman’s character is reduced to managing  Atom, an old generation robot whose remains are discovered in a junkyard.  Through this vehicle Jackman may attempt a comeback denied his human flesh, and gain reconciliation with his estranged son…as you might expect, the actor who’s played Wolverine and Van Helsing has some wild talents up his sleeve. – -Sure, it sounds cheesy and it ain’t Shakespeare, but this Steel is more than scrap metal, and might be fun…

Puss in Boots: The Movie

October 3, 2011

 – – Played by Latin hunk Antonio Banderas and likely to buckle every swash in sight, Puss in Boots:  The Movie is coming from DreamWorks Animation on November 4th.

A spin-off movie for the CGI character from the Shrek movies,  Puss is a prequel which will follow the exploits of the courageous cat before he even met Shrek, and detail the roots and evolution of the character into a Zorro-like figure.  And yes, Puss in Boots will have have a love interest, called (what else?)…Kitty Softpaws!

As the character with cat-itude most memorably says in one scene, “Stay furry, my friends!

Some “Thing’s” Coming!

September 27, 2011

 – – Wow, it doesn’t seem possible that it was way back in 1982 that John Carpenter made his version of the sci-fi/horror classic The Thing, complete with Kurt Russell as that film’s protagonist, R.J. MacReady!- –Well, some Thing else is coming this October, this version a prequel taking place three days before the events of the John Carpenter film and following the exploits of the Norwegian and American scientists unfortunate enough to originally discover the shape-shifting alien.

While it’s hard to beat Kurt Russell, the new version of The Thing includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Dr. Kate Lloyd, a lead character somewhat modeled after Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in the Alien film series; fortunately, no romantic or sexual elements will be introduced associated with her character in keeping with the dark tone and paranoid atmospherics of the previous film.   Efforts have been made to keep the new film visually consistent with the 1982 Carpenter flick, and creature effects will include both animatronic and computer generated imagery.  We’ll be seeing much more of the interior of the crashed alien spacecraft, and it will also be implied what the nasty alien mimics were doing about in the galaxy.- -All in all, The Thing should serve to remind us that if we find something buried deep in the ice in Antarctica, leave it the hell alone!

I plan on seeing The Thing in October, and you may want to, as well…who knows, The Thing may become you!

Blofeld’s Kitty…

September 12, 2011

 – – James Bond’s archenemy Ernst Stavro Blofeld was originally never shown facially, but only in closeup stroking his white Persian cat.  Blofeld never calls the cat by name or even  acknowledges that he is holding one, although the supervillain holding a cat has become a stock cliche parodied in the Austin Powers series by the character of Dr. Evil with his cat, Mr. Bigglesworth.

While Blofeld was dumped down an industrial chimney by Bond in For Your Eyes Only, the cat jumps to safety, and is probably out there working for several organizations bent on world domination until his nefarious schemes come to fruition…

“Cloverfield” Sequel?

September 1, 2011

 – – Whether and when there will be a sequel to the 2008 sci-fi movie Cloverfield is a topic of wild speculation, with no clear answer to either question at present.  I loved the original, although it took several viewings for the film to really grow on me.  Some good movies have had some disappointing or bad sequels, and I would hope that if a sequel is made, it would be worthy of its predecessor without that original essentially being re-made.  Clearly, the “hooks” are there on which a sequel could be mounted, most notably the creature’s apparent survival of even nuclear attack.   Speculations from the fandom have included a film made from the military’s perspective, a prequel, or even a film from the monster’s perspective!

I am guardedly hopeful that a sequel will eventually be made, although probably not in the near future.   Director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams have had a variety of other projects, although interest reportedly still exists in eventually returning to the Cloverfield universe…

Unsinkable “Battleship?”

August 1, 2011

 – – More bad aliens are on the horizon, guys.  While sitting in the theater waiting to see Cowboys and Aliens and wondering why I was being subjected to a Buick commercial as minutes ticked by,  previews also airedincluding one for a movie not to reach the big screen until May of 2012.  The movie is called Battleship, and is loosely based on…the board game of the same name, with alien invaders thrown in as the antagonists.  Said aliens, “The Regents,” have come to Earth to build a power source in the ocean.  During their visit, the aliens encounter a navy fleet, and a very intense and dynamic battle ensues.  The teaser trailer shows a humongous USO emerging from the sea; “Prepare to fire!,” orders the commanding officer.  “Sir, which weapons?,” questions the subordinate.  “All of them,” responds the commander.

Now movies have been made about board and video games before, for example Clue and Mortal CombatBattleship will be one of the most expensive movies that Hollywood has ever made with an estimated budget of 200 million, and it carries the distinction of already having been cited by James Cameron (Aliens) as an example of the lack of creativity and viable story lines in Hollywood.

I’m not worried about the outcome of this conflict, however.  We can always turn Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford or the SEALs loose on the aliens…

Creative and Awesome “Cowboys and Aliens!”

July 30, 2011

 – – If you go to see no other movie this summer or even this year, go see Cowboys & Aliens, which just opened at theaters this Friday, July 29th.  In a summer filled with disappointments, re-makes, and movies which just should never have been made, Cowboys & Aliens shines brightly, truly a beacon in the darkness.  It boasts an innovative storyline, some superb acting, rich atmospherics, and quality special effects.   While absurd on the surface, the movie works, is well crafted, and totally cool!

Alien menaces have been the rage for the past several years now, and one hopes that such a mentality does not hold sway in a real first contact situation with Earth, or the Vulcans may get blown away when they touch down in the future.  Still, the human race loves to overcome differences to unite against overwhelming odds, and so it was in the western town of  Absolution in the New Mexican Territory circa 1873 when a group of nasty aliens came to harvest gold and humans; when a cattle incineration occurs, we almost expect to see Fox Mulder’s great-grandfather introduced.  Daniel Craig as the enigmatic Jake Lonergan and Harrison Ford as Col. Dolarhyde overcome technological limitations to whip some serious alien butt, in the process uniting diverse enemies and even getting an assist from Native Americans. – – You haven’t lived until you’ve seen vicious aliens peppered by arrows and pierced by a lance!  These aliens are vulnerable because they underestimated us, so they deserve what they get, ‘ya see, and even their inner set of arms won’t save them.

This isn’t a comedy or a spoof and is played straight, although western traditions are played off left and right.  Craig provides a variation on Clint Eastwood’s “man with no name” as the man with no memory who finds himself in the desert soon to be assailed by undesirables.  Fortunately Craig brought his James Bond fighting skills with him, and has a nifty wrist rocket gadget appropriated from the aliens that might have been developed by “Q” himself.  Equally tough as nails is Harrison Ford, looking splendid in the saddle and seemingly as miffed at  government as everyone else.  When James Bond and Indiana Jones get together, you’re in for a wild and fun ride!- – So what if it’s not Shakespeare.

I applaud intelligent and well-done crossover movies such as Cowboys and Aliens, and hope that we’ll see more of them!   When Craig’s character rides off at the end Eastwood-like, a sequel is all but begged for.  Perhaps a few aliens could be spared to vaporize the Smurfs that were playing in the adjoining theater…now that’s a menace!

Hail, Caesar!

July 24, 2011

 – – Caesar’s back, and he’s dark and seriously miffed…Caesar of the Planet of the Apes franchise, that is!  It’s been a long time since the original 1968 Charlton Heston Apes movie introduced us to what was then revolutionary special effects make-up  and the delights of Roddy McDowall as chimpanzee archaeologist Cornelius; he would later play Cornelius’ son, Caesar, in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and later in Battle for the Planet of the Apes.  McDowall characteristically spent close to four hours in the make-up chair for each chimpanzee transformation.  Despite wearing heavy ape prosthetic appliances, McDowall was able to effectively emote his character’s personality by exaggerating his facial expressions.

In the new Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie headed your way in August, a scientist is experimenting on a chimpanzee named Caesar to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease.  Caesar’s intelligence is greatly enhanced by the experiments, and well…you know the rest.  The CGI apes have amazingly intelligent-looking eyes, but it remains to be seen whether this new Apes movie will be more fun than a barrel of monkeys or will simply drive you bananas…
