Some “Thing’s” Coming!
– – Wow, it doesn’t seem possible that it was way back in 1982 that John Carpenter made his version of the sci-fi/horror classic The Thing, complete with Kurt Russell as that film’s protagonist, R.J. MacReady!- –Well, some Thing else is coming this October, this version a prequel taking place three days before the events of the John Carpenter film and following the exploits of the Norwegian and American scientists unfortunate enough to originally discover the shape-shifting alien.
While it’s hard to beat Kurt Russell, the new version of The Thing includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Dr. Kate Lloyd, a lead character somewhat modeled after Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in the Alien film series; fortunately, no romantic or sexual elements will be introduced associated with her character in keeping with the dark tone and paranoid atmospherics of the previous film. Efforts have been made to keep the new film visually consistent with the 1982 Carpenter flick, and creature effects will include both animatronic and computer generated imagery. We’ll be seeing much more of the interior of the crashed alien spacecraft, and it will also be implied what the nasty alien mimics were doing about in the galaxy.- -All in all, The Thing should serve to remind us that if we find something buried deep in the ice in Antarctica, leave it the hell alone!
I plan on seeing The Thing in October, and you may want to, as well…who knows, The Thing may become you!

I first read about this prequel a few months ago, and while I’d certainly like to see a new horror/science fiction film as good as Carpenter’s “The Thing,” it’s hard to be optimistic about this one. To some extent it’s encouraging that at least the new movie isn’t yet another utterly unnecessary “reboot,” and I suppose the concepts of possibly learning more about the alien lifeform, and getting a look inside the derelict spacecraft are interesting. But why not take the same resources and attempt to make an original and effective *new* film — something that might make as deep and lasting impact upon the next generation of filmmakers and audiences as The Thing (or “Videodrome” or “Blade Runner”)?
Ah well, Carpenter’s movie is a remake of a film from the 1950s after all, and unless I read enough negative descriptions of the prequel to convince me it’s probably awful, I’ll most likely end up seeing it via Netflix at some point…

Hollywood tends to be highly imitative of its own successes at this point, grinding out sequels and prequels many of which are inferior to their originals. I hope that this new “Thing” isn’t a disappointment, especially since the Carpenter film knocked my socks off, and was incredible for 1982. My love for the earlier flick and even the 1950’s original guarantee my attendance at this effort, and I’ll no doubt enjoy it to at least some extent even if it proves to be inferior to its lineage.–Thanks for your comment!
