— I found the season premier of Monster Quest rather disappointing. It was about monster hogs, giant pigs supposedly a growing problem in certain southern states like Texas. Investigative techniques were used like attaching a camera to a wild pig and releasing it in the hopes that it would lead to these giant pigs…that’s right, a hog cam! Despite amusing close-ups of pig bristles and bouncing countryside, no giant hogs were found.
And what about the people who investigate and capture wild hogs, the so-called hog wranglers? Would you like a job like that, or would you eventually get boared?

Courage, the Cowardly Dog by John R. Dilworth has many enemies, some human, others animal, some otherworldly. My personal fave is The Cajun Fox (pictured), who wears sunglasses and desires to cook Courage’s owner, Muriel, into a stew or gumbo. He never succeeds, but looks very good in his efforts.
Hopefully we will continue to see more of this fox, along with other memorable furry enemies such as Le Quack the Duck, and of course the Cat. Evil is so much more interesting than good, don’t ‘ya think?

— Now this is strange… it may someday be possible to generate meat artificially using cloning technology without hacking it from an animal. This would be done in the same fashion that cells and organs might be generated from stem cells; muscle tissue would be generated without it having come from a once-living, intact creature. Rewards have been offered by some animal-rights groups towards this end, with chicken flesh the most likely to be initially created. Ethical questions and divisive, organization-splitting differences of opinion abound as this new territory begins to be explored…

— A giant squid currently being thawed out and examined in New Zealand has the world’s largest eye with a lens the size of an orange; the eye itself in total is about the size of a dinner plate. The squid measured about 26 feet long when caught accidentally by fishermen off Antarctica last February; it weighs in excess of 1,000 pounds!
Giant squids are mollusks, cephalopods to be more specific that are related to the octopus. Specimens larger than this one are regarded to exist in the ocean depths!

–On April 25th, a 66-year-old retired veterinarian triathlete while training was killed in a shark attack off the California coast. It was the first shark attack there in four years, and the 96th since 1926. The man suffered massive bite wounds to his legs by the Great White, and attempts to save him failed. The shark swam away after inflicting the fatal bite…

— The 39-year-old trainer of a grizzly bear called Rocky was killed by the bear with a bite to the neck at a training site in California called Predators in Action. The 5-year-old bear was normally gentle, and had been trained to wrestle handlers on cue; he had appeared in several movies…the fate of the bear remains uncertain at present.

— Was it poet Carl Sandburg who described the fog as creeping in on “little cat feet?”–How about cougar paws? A 150-pound cougar was shot dead by police in a residential neighborhood of Chicago’s North Side, ending a series of recent sightings reported in recent times. The cougar will be checked for tags and implanted chips which might reveal if the cougar was someone’s pet.
As reported in a recent Monster Quest episode, however, large predacious animals have recently been reported in areas assumed to be devoid of them…intrusions which will probably become increasingly common as the natural habitats and prey of those animals are whittled away by man…

— If a dog bites a person, it’s not news…the reverse is news! Well, a 38-year-old woman in Minneapolis saw a pit bull attack her 12-year-old lab in her fenced-in back yard on Friday, and she couldn’t pry the other dog’s jaws loose, so she bit the pit bull on the nose! The pit bull then released its grip, and the lab named Ella was saved, although it suffered injuries. The woman actually experienced having the pit bull’s blood in her mouth.
The pit bull is being tested for rabies to see if the woman must undergo treatment…

— The 37-year-old owner of a wildlife sanctuary in Florida was attack by two cheetahs on Sunday, suffering over 40 puncture wounds. Her injuries are reported to be non-life threatening.
When the cheetahs had the woman in their possession, they acted instinctively, trying to retain possession of her as they would of prey or even a toy…
