– – Not to be confused with Forrest Gump, it’s time to talk about our ghoul friends, like this one reportedly photographed by a deer hunter on a reserve in Berwick near Morgan City, Louisiana. The hunter contends that he was lying in wait in the pitch black when this specter with glowing eyes filled his sights. The mysterious thing jumped from the undergrowth and flashed a look at the camera before vanishing back into the bushes. The hunter was so spooked he broke his camera, but conveniently retrieved the undamaged memory chip from which this image was supposedly produced.
While creepy, the eyes and limbs of this thing don’t look real to me, and if it isn’t photoshopped, it may be a suit of some sort…don’t bet the rent on the reality of this creature, but I’ll take Halloween over Xmas any day!

– – I, for one, prefer not to get tarantulas in my mail. The bills are bad enough…
…but a German man stands accused of sending more than 500 live tarantulas through the mail, receiving more than $300,000 for the arachnids.
Special agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service waged a sting operation (so to speak), ordering and receiving dozens of live tarantulas in an investigation known as “Operation Spiderman.” If convicted, the person involved faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000…
…and for your reference, the entire Brachypelma genus is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species because it is being threatened by international trade, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
– -Well, there goes my gift idea for my relatives this Xmas!

– – Colonel Sanders probably wouldn’t do this; knit a sweater for a chicken, that is…
In certain environmental conditions or when they are heavily stressed, some animals can lose their fur or feathers, as the case may be.- -Well, some chickens in England were rescued from a poultry farm where conditions were so bad that the birds lost their feathers! Volunteer knitters responded by creating over 100 sweaters for the afflicted chickens, which I suppose we may refer to as chicken cardigans or pullet pullovers. Not to be found in any catalogs, each of the tiny sweaters when knitted by hand took two and a half to three hours to complete.
The rescued chickens while freed from incarceration will wear the sweaters to help them acclimate to conditions on the outside, and hopefully they will only see the Colonel in their worst nightmares…just like I see the Burger King in mine.

– – I could die happy if extraterrestrial life or a major cryptid would be found within my lifetime, but disappointment constantly haunts these dreams.
–Well, here’s another straw to clutch at: a guy in Michigan claims to possess an ice meteorite rich in extraterrestrial organisms that conveniently plopped down on the road near his home in South Haven, Michigan in March of 2000.
Since it hadn’t snowed for weeks, the guy deduced that the ice must have been from an ice meteorite. He gathered up the ice, stashed it in his freezer, and spent the following ten years trying to convince scientists to analyze the frozen mass. Their collective interest was underwhelming, and the true believer in September put out his own bucks to have chemical analyses performed by two commercial labs. The labs found that the samples contained particles with unique molecular structures, which their finder regards to be alien life forms.
A news conference will be held November 30th at a Ramada Inn in South Haven regarding the supposed find with coverage from media outlets, mostly hailing from outside of this country. The discoverer admits that more rigorous analysis is needed to see if the meteorite is a meteor-wrong..

– – How would you like a piggy bank made from a real piggy?–No, I wouldn’t, either…
They are for sale, however, from a novelty retailer out of Vancouver, British Columbia; yes, taxidermied piglet piggy banks for a mere $4,000 each! Production costs are high for the item, with the taxidermy process alone taking six months. The piglets used have actually died of natural causes.
Animal activists have called the piglet banks, “a particularly callous and demeaning exploitation of a baby animal’s dead body.” Although no pigs are killed to make the piglet banks, the co-owner of the Canadian novelty retail establishment which has been brought much publicity feels that the real argument would seem to be about taxidermy and whether preserving animals for aesthetic appeal is ethical.
There is unquestionably value in taxidermy to the extent that it has allowed for rare and extinct animals to be displayed and studied; I personally find the display of hacked-off animal parts to be gruesome and repugnant, however…

– – Talk about guerilla theater! Earlier this month during a live newscast tracking the progress of Hurricane Ike that showed the wave-lashed beach off Galveston, Texas the on-site weatherman had to cope with the unexpected appearance behind him of…an anthropomorphic bear!
In a surreal moment worthy of the best of Trigger-Happy TV, the bear-costumed figure moved with grace and agility behind the weatherman, seemingly unconcerned about the rough seas and striking a pose or two for the viewing audience. The befuddled newscaster, his thunder utterly stolen, could think of nothing better to do other than to shift the camera to a view of a battered pier…all the while kinda pretending that the bear’s antics were not going on!
…caught by surprise by a furry, it was a moment to live for!

– – J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels have popularized owls, which is a bad thing to the extent that fans of the young wizard and his owl Hedwig have been buying endangered owls from illegal bird traders!
This has been a problem in such countries as India, where the environment minister revealed that a recent report details that nearly half of India’s 30 species of owls can be found on sale at markets. In addition to their Harry Potter appeal, people also buy the owls for medicinal purposes and for sacrifice in some Hindu festivals.
In the Harry Potter novels, owls are used as a form of communication, carrying important messages…

– – I have terrible news…Paul, the Psychic Octopus, is no more! The tentacled tipster, who on eight separate occasions correctly predicted the winner of FIFA World Cup soccer matches, passed away in his tank in the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany early Tuesday morning.
Paul’s predictions were rendered by which of two mussel-containing boxes representing competing teams he picked. The odds of picking eight straight winners are estimated as being more than 300 to 1. Someone who had bet $20 on Paul’s picks from the start of the World Cup and then let the bet ride throughout the tournament would have walked away with about $4,500!
Sadly, the octopus is not a long-lived creature, and Paul expired at the age of two and a half. An octopus, it is said, generally grows to maturity, breeds, and dies…just the basics. It is rumored that the psychic cephalopod may have known of his own impending death, but if so he kept it to himself. The candles which burn the brightest burn the briefest, after all…

– – Did you know it’s legal to buy real plastinated body parts online?–Yuppers, a German anatomist famous for his controversial Body World exhibition is selling both human and animal body parts which have had water and fat replaced with plastic for preservation purposes. One of the tamer examples of such a process is pictured, but you can get a whole body, torso, or just a head. For the budget-conscious, transparent body slices are also available…
Only “qualified users” who can provide written proof that they intend to use the parts for research, teaching, or medical purposes can place an order, however. This doesn’t mean that the general public can’t buy jewelry crafted from animal corpses or reproductions of the real human body parts.- -I swear I am not making this up!
A bit of the ghoulish submitted for your approval as we approach Halloween…

– – Animal impersonations tend not to win many talent competitions, especially when they’re offered unsolicited in the middle of the night… and so one boozy German who regaled his neighbors by bleating like a sheep and doing other animal impressions, some for as long as twenty minutes, found himself arrested in the Bavarian town of Coburg on Sunday.
The 49-year-old man had an extremely high blood alcohol content, and became “unreasonable and aggressive” when police tried to get him to cease his bleating…I guess his impersonations were pretty baaad, and neighbors wanted to be counting sheep rather than hearing them…
