Bee-Venom Therapy?

March 20, 2010

– – I, for one, don’t like being stung by insects, and have gotten more than enough of that while mowing the lawn.   There are those who think, however, that being stung by bees is good for what ails you, including conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, multiple sclerosis,  fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and even depression. – -Hey, let’s go out and get stung!- -That ought to give us a lift!

Now believers in apitherapy don’t wait for random insect attacks, but rather tend to use groups of up to 100 honey bees raised for the purpose.  Self-treatment seems to be common, while more formal treatments are offered in the orient for the equivalent of about $18.

Does it work?- – Persuasive personal testimonials are out there, but so are sightings of aliens and Bigfoot.   Supportive research studies are few and far between.  Studies in Greece and South Korea have shown anti-arthritic effects in mice, which of course we like to see lively and flexible.  Most results are not conclusive, and while the benefits of such therapy are uncertain, the dangers are clear with about 2% of the population susceptible to allergic reactions from the stings of bees and wasps.   Those considering a full bee barrage should also consider the fact that your body tolerated the first 99 stings doesn’t guarantee it can handle the 100th…

“Giant Killer Bees” on MonsterQuest…

February 5, 2010

– – Whenever I hear of killer bees, I think of that wonderful old Saturday Night Live sketch with the original cast and their tacky but hilarious get-ups…bobbing antennae and all!

I’m less fond of the more mundane MonsterQuest episodes featuring such things as feral dogs, underground rats, and yes, killer bees.  It strikes me that the series is stretching for material on such episodes, expanding and sensationalizing what they have.  Killer bees are a rather old saw at this point, and only the beekeeping forums were buzzing about this one.

Don’t get me wrong; bees are awesome insects, kinda nature’s Borg collective.  Like the pythons featured in the previous episode, they’re expanding their range, and can adapt to colder northern environments by doing things like “clustering,” grouping together in the central core of their hives to conserve and share heat.

The episode just lacked the shock and awe factor of the cryptid episodes, and is more like something I’d expect on National Geographic than The Quest

Vegetarian Spider Found!

October 13, 2009

vegetarian spider– – A rare vegetarian spider has been found in Central America!   Most spiders are strictly predators, living on insects and other animals.  Bagheera kiplingi is about the size of a person’s pinky nail, and is a jumping spider who lives on acacia shrubs.

There are about 40,000 or so spider species, but most of the big spider textbooks (I know we all read them) almost outright claimed that there were no herbivorous spiders.–Well, they’re wrong!

Now one can envision kids furtively sweeping veggies off their dinner plates to the dog or into the potted plant, and blaming their disappearance on a herbivorous spider…

Spider Pope!

September 28, 2009

Spider PopeIs it an omen?– – A large arachnid appeared on Pope Benedict XVI’s white robes as he addressed politicians and diplomats in Prague on Saturday afternoon (see speck on shoulder)!  The Pope didn’t seem to notice at first, but the not so itsy-bitsy spider made journalists flinch as the arachnid inched towards Benedict’s neck!

The spider disappeared from view for a moment, but then could be seen crawling up the right side of the pontiff’s face- –eww! When it reached his ear, Benedict gave it a swat…but the persistent arachnid reappeared on the Pope’s left shoulder and then scampered down his robe.  As the Pope left Prague Castle’s Spanish Hall, the spider could be seen hanging from a piece of web!

– -Well, that spider’s now darned to heck…but will the Pope  gain amazing arachnoid powers?- –That would be so cool!!!- -And what a recruitment tool for the church!- –I’d warm a pew for that!- -I can see a Marvel Comics cover now!

<sings> Spider-Pope!- -Spider-Pope!- -He does everything a Spider-Pope does!

Bee Swarm Attack!

May 24, 2009

bee swarm– – A swarm of bees recently trapped workers inside a game store in Union Square in New York City for hours!  A good samaritan outside the store without protective gear managed to lure many of the bees inside a box, and a specially-dressed expert arrived later to capture the rest of the swarm, with the bees  successfully re-located unharmed.

…at least there are worse places to be trapped than a game store!
