Vintage Stephen King Fun with “Sleepwalkers…”

August 29, 2026

I recently revisited the 1992 movie of Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers, and found it worthy of a second look even if the film is now over thirty years old. Cats often figure in King’s works, including Cat’s Eye and Pet Sematary, and they are quite prominent in Sleepwalkers as defenders against supernatural and demonic creatures, a role to which they are often assigned in other cultures.

Now special effects have improved considerably in the past several decades, but the somewhat dated images of the Sleepwalkers almost helps blur the line between horror and dark comedy, adding to the picture rather than detracting from it. It seems that Sleepwalkers are ancient, nomadic shapeshifters and energy vampires who can turn into human-sized werecats, and need to feed on the life force of young female virgins to survive…

Powers of the Sleepwalkers include a level of telekinesis, the ability to cast illusions, and make themselves or things become invisible through a power that they appropriately call “dimming.” Domestic cats are their only and ultimate enemy who can discern them readily, see through their human disguises, and inflict deadly wounds that burn the vampiric felines like acid, causing them ultimately to combust when sufficient damage has been inflicted…

When mother Mary and son Charles Brady come to town in search of anonymity and fresh meat, their house is stalked by a large number of domestic cats who see them for what the couple really is, and really can’t stand them at all. BTW, these shapeshifters are incestuous, and may be the last of their kind. The teenage-appearing son soon targets a likely virginal victim, but winds up tangling with and killing a deputy sheriff Andy, who travels with his cat Clovis in his squad car. The deputy doesn’t survive his encounter with the feline shapeshifter, but his cat does…and is severely ticked off at the loss of his master, hovering by his body in a heartbreaking scene. It then becomes woe to the wicked time…

Mortally wounded by his intended victim and Clovis, the teenage-appearing shape-shifter makes it home where his infuriated mother takes out numerous cops before being assaulted by a virtual cat army organized by Clovis. Although some cats bravely fall in battle, they ultimately watch her body burn with an unflinching intensity that only cats can muster. Stephen King himself has a cameo as (what else?) a cemetery caretaker…and 126 real cats as well as fake mechanical and puppet cats were used in the picture…

The intended victim of the shape-shifters goes on to adopt Clovis, who proves that domestic housecats are not to be underestimated! Sleepwalkers may be seen on Netflix until the end of the month…

A New “Cat in the Hat” Animated Film is Coming!

June 13, 2026

Originally intended for an earlier 2026 release, a new animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic, The Cat in the Hat is now projected to open in November of 2026 to better capitalize on the Christmas trade. It should be better received than the 2003 live action version of the story that featured Mike Myers…

Sometimes referred to as “The Cat who Fell Flat,” the 2003 movie was I think a better film than it’s often credited to be, although it’s a bit crass, and the humor is rather “out there.” A sequel was originally intended, but the widow of Dr. Seuss so disliked the film that she forbid live action films of her husband’s work to ever again be made. The successful How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) predated The Cat, and was a winner with Jim Carrey.

Believe it or not, the title role in The Cat in the Hat live action movie was originally intended for Tim Allen, but he had a conflict so the part went to Myers, who was a pretty big box office draw having done the Shrek films and the Austin Powers series. It’s really hard for me to imagine Tim Allen as the character despite his many talents, and I think that Myers brought the required manic energy to the part. While the makeup was a bit creepy, he did look more like a cat than the strange hybrid “cats” of the movie musical version of Cats. The 2003 live-action film adaptation faced heavy backlash for featuring adult-oriented humor that alienated family audiences with adult double entendres and crude potty humor, and some have gone so far as to suggest that the Cat’s visual design and performative tricks are rooted in 19th-century blackface minstrelsy…but I think that this is an extension too far…

I still love The Cat in all of his incarnations, anyways, who in this 2026 film appears appropriately enough to be on a reclamation proving mission for himself, risking losing his “stripes” (iconic hat) if he fails. The Cat is my fave Dr. Sseus character, before and after The Grinch achieved massive popularity. This Cat is modern, in touch, and slick, without any apparent adult content; you can be hip, appealing, and funny without being dirty! He’s resilient, too, getting maced in the eyes upon his initial contact by the kids he’s trying to help. – – Welcome to 2026, Cat! If the Cat can find redemption, dare we hope that Pepe Le Pew is not far behind?!

This animation is friendly to the Cat in the Hat character, which was originally translated from the classic 1957 children’s book to an animated TV special in 1971. The upcoming 2026 film comes from Warner Bros. Pictures, so it has a good pedigree. Maybe we’ll have a Thing or Two to say about it, with the Things in this film revealed to be more than a duo…the talking fish is there, too…

Who’s a Good Boy?- -“Krypto,” of Course!

December 20, 2024

It’s official...coming in July 2025, we will be privy to seeing the first furry superhero on the big screen, discounting such notable characters as Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy, of course!

When the new James Gunn Superman movie trailer opens, we see The Man of Steel as being terribly vulnerable, in a world of hurt, actually…cut, bleeding, spitting up blood, and actually in dire need of help! Fortunately, Supes has his best friend Krypto available to save his tail, taking the injured superhero from his frozen crash site home by the cape!

Yes, Krypto in the upcoming movie is more than just a cute pet, but rather an underrated powerhouse…and he promises to have significant roles in other upcoming DC movies as well! Thankfully, Krypto will not speak in the movie as he has in some of the animated cartoon versions, but only bark. He’s a dog, but one with formidable powers…

The new Superman movie seeks to further humanize the titular character, making him more relatable. Yes, this Superman is an alien, but his heart is human. He can shoot beams from his eyes, but you don’t have to be afraid of him. The entire tone of the movie is brighter, reflected in the color schemes. All in all, I think that this is a good course correction…

The ambitious scope and nuances of the upcoming movie are too vast to cover in a single post, so this blog will probably return to it. For now, enjoy the official trailer, and the upcoming holiday, no matter how you may celebrate it…
