Easter Bloody Easter…

Here comes Peter Rottentail! It seems to be a recent trend in movies to reverse iconic benevolent or virtuous characters such as Santa, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, or Bambi to make them menacing and malevolent. – -Well, Easter is coming, and we’ve got a bad egg for your basket in the form of a malevolent Jackalope terrorizing a Texas town!

A jackalope is kind of a shape-shifting creature that is part human and part giant horned rabbit, and it appears that local legend holds that such ravaged the area a century and a half ago. Guess who’s making a comeback, leading a demon bunny army, and just in time for the small town’s Easter-palooza!

The horror-comedy opens in late March, and you know about those mad March hares! It’s up to Texas determination and a professional bunny slayer to split a few hares… 🙀

Actually, the jackalope is usually just a taxidermized rabbit with artificial mini-antlers glued on. And the fabricator is usually a bartender, out West, hoping to gyp some thirsty tourist from back East by selling them the stuffed critter as “evidence” that it’s a rare hybrid of jackrabbit and antelope!
Author and cryptozoology buff Loren Coleman explains that this hokum usually succeeds because the scam is reinforced by photos of genuine animals. Namely; the pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) and the antelope jackrabbit (Lepus alleni). He also identifies similar none-such creatures like the fur-bearing lake trout of the North Woods….and the drop bear of Australia!*
*Supposedly, a brain-eating koala who ambushes from above.

As for me? I’d prefer a horror movie about Easter Island. Where the statues turn out to be silicon life forms from outer space!*
*Maybe Marvel Films could do that for their next Thor sequel.

One more thought for tonight: how do you think this jackalope would do against that boomerang-throwing Guardian voiced by Hugh Jackman?

You know, I thought about that! E. Aster Bunnymund could take the jackalope, easily!
