Oldest Dog Dies…

— Every dog has his day,/That is what the people say…dang, I’m stuck in rhyme, Aieeee!
…and for Chanel, Guinness World Record holder for oldest living dog, that day is over. The 21-year-old wirehaired dachshund died August 28th. She resided in New York, and had been rescued from an animal shelter in Virginia when just a young pup.
Chanel was 147 in dog years, and wore sunglasses for cataracts but otherwise was in good health. –RIP, mon ami!

I’m reminded of a joke I heard that dates back to the 1960’s. A guy who had lost his canine companion wanted her eulogized like no one else’s pet. So, he decided to hire ex-vaudeville legend (and staunch opponent of anti-Semitism) Georgie Jessel!
Now, naturally, when he heard he would be eulogizing a DOG, he was a little hesitant. But, as he was strapped for cash, he finally agreed.
“What’s the name of the deceased,” he asked.
“Fluffy,” replied the grief-stricken owner.
“My friends,” began Jessel (in his trademark nasal falsetto): “What can we say about Fluffy…that hasn’t been said before?”
Jessel went on like this for a full ten or fifteen minutes, until there wasn’t a dry eye in the pet cemetary. Afterward, Fluffy’s grateful owner shook Jessel’s hands like a pump handle.
“Thank you, Mr. Jessel!” he exclaimed: “Thank you!! I know Fluffy was a good dog. But, I never knew she had done so much for the State of Israel!”

So, in that same sorrow-easing spirit:
“My friends! What can we say about Chanel…that hasn’t been said before? She was born…at a very
early age. Her parents were a very argumentative couple. But, for her sake, they stuck together through thirty years of thick-and-thin. He called her ‘thin-skinned’/she called him ‘thick-headed!’ Heh-heh! Heh-heh! Heh-heh!”
